PAM8014 document number: ds 38114 rev. 1 - 2 6 of 9 www.diodes.com january 2016 ? diodes incorporated new product application information close loop gain (g v ) the close loop gain is set by the ratio of the input resistance r in and feedback resistance r f (refer to block diagram) , and the close loop gain equation is as follow: which r f is set at 124k and r in is 31k , the g v default is 8v/v, which is 18db. input capacitor s (c in ) in the typical application, an input capacitor, c in , is required to allow the amplifier to bias the input signal to the proper dc level for optimum operation. in this case, c in and the input impedance r in form is a high - pass filter with the corner frequency determined in the follow equation: it is important to consider the value of c in as it directly affects the low frequency performance of the circuit. for example, when r in is 31k and the specification calls for a flat bass response are down to 150hz. equation is reconfigured as followed: whe n input resistance variation is considered, the c in is 7nf, so one would likely choose a value of 10nf. a further consideration for this capacitor is the leakage path from the input so urce through the input network c in , r in and feedback resistor r f to the load. this leakage current creates a dc offset voltage at the input to the amplifier that reduces useful headroom, especially in high gain applications. for this reason, a low - leakage tantalum or ceramic capacitor is the best choice. when polarized capacit ors are used, the positive side of the capacitor should face the amplifier input in most applications as the dc level is held at v dd /2, which is likely higher than the source dc level. please note that it is important to confirm the capacitor polarity in t he application. decoupling capacitor (cs ) the PAM8014 is a high - performance cmos audio amplifier that requires adequate power supply decoupling to ensure the output total harmonic distortion (thd) as low as possible. power supply decoupling also prevents the oscillations causing by long lead length betwe en t he amplifier and the speaker. the optimum decoupling is achieved by using two different types of capacitors that target on different types of noise on the power supply leads. for highe r frequency transients, spikes, or digital hash on the line, a good low equivalent-series - resistance (esr) ceramic capacitor, typically 1f, is placed as close as possible to the device v dd pin for the best operation. for filtering lower frequency noise signals, a large ceramic capacitor of 10f or greater placed near the aud io power amplifier is recommended. how to reduce emi most applications require a ferrite bead filter for emi elimination shown at figure 1. the ferrite filter reduces emi around 1mhz and higher. when selecting a ferrite bead, choose one with high impedan ce at high frequencies, but low impedance at low frequencies. figure 1 . ferrite bead filter to reduce emi 200pf 200pf out+ out - ferrite bead ferrite bead
PAM8014 document number: ds 38114 rev. 1 - 2 7 of 9 www.diodes.com january 2016 ? diodes incorporated new product application information ( cont .) shutdown operation in order to reduce power consumption while not in use, the PAM8014 contains shutdown circuitry amplifier off when logic low is placed on the en pin. by switching the shutdown pin connected to gnd, the pam801 4 supply current draw will be minimized in idle mode. under voltage lock - out (uvlo) the PAM8014 incorporat es circuitry designed to detect low supply voltage. when the supply voltage drops to 2.0v or below, the PAM8014 goes into a state of shutdown, and the device comes out of its shutdown state and restore to normal function only when v dd higher than 2.2v. sh ort circuit protection (scp) the PAM8014 has short circuit protection circuitry on the outputs to prevent the device from damage when output - to - output shorts or output - to - gnd shorts occur. when a short circuit occurs, the device immediately goes into shutd own state. once the short is removed, the device will be reactivated. over temperature protection (otp) thermal protection on the PAM8014 prevents the device from damage when the internal die temperature exceeds + 150c. there is a + 15c tolerance on this trip point from device to device. once the die temperature exceeds the set point, the device will enter the shutdown state and the outputs are disabled. this is not a latched fault. the thermal fault is cleared once the temperature o f the die decreased by + 40c. this large hysteresis will prevent motor boating sound well and the device begins normal operation at this point with no external system interaction. pop and click circuitry the PAM8014 contains circuitry to minimize turn - on and turn - off transients or click and pops, where turn - on refers to either power supply turn - on or device recover from shutdown mode. when the device is turned on, the amplifiers are internally muted. an internal current source ramps up the internal refe rence voltage. the device will remain in mute mode until the reference voltage reach half supply voltage, 1/2 v dd . as soon as the reference voltage is stable, the device will begin full operation. for the best power - off pop performance, the amplifier shoul d be set in shutdown mode prior to removing the power supply voltage. ordering information (note 4 ) PAM8014 x x x a: 9 pin z: u - wlb1313 - 9 r: tape & re e l part number package 7 tape and reel quantity part number suffix PAM8014azr u - wlb1313 - 9 30 00/tape & reel - 7 note : 4 . for packaging det ails, go to our website at http : //www.diodes.com/products/packages.html . package pack ing pin configuration
